Bernard Allison
The great Chicago bluesman Luther Allison lived by the philosophy, “Leave your ego, play the music, love the people.” Twenty-three years after his passing, his son, Bernard Allison, continues this legacy with Songs From The Road. Released in January 2020 on Ruf Records, this live CD/DVD captures the raw energy of Bernard’s performance at Dortmund’s Musiktheater Piano club. The album, mixed by industry legend Jim Gaines, immerses listeners in the atmosphere of the live show, showcasing every moment of virtuosity and interaction.
Bernard prefers live performances for their audience interaction and energy. His career, launched with 1990’s The Next Generation, has produced numerous highlights. The Dortmund setlist includes recent hits from 2019’s Let It Go like “Night Train” and “You’re Gonna Need Me”, as well as classics from his extensive catalog such as “The Way Love Was Meant To Be” and “I Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”.
A special moment is his performance of “Let’s Try It Again” from his father Luther’s 1984 album, Life Is A Bitch, bringing his musical journey full circle. Supported by Dylan Salfer (guitar), George Moye (bass), Mario Dawson (drums), and José James (sax/percussion), Bernard’s band reinterprets these songs with fresh arrangements, showcasing their unity and chemistry.
Songs From The Road captures the exchange of energy between band and audience, continuing Luther’s enduring philosophy. “We’re there for the people to enjoy each other’s stories for the evening,” says Bernard, reflecting the spirit of his father’s legacy.
